Cisco intros virtual desktop portfolio in India

BANGALORE, INDIA: In a bid to make it big in the virtual desktop space, networking equipment vendor Cisco - along with its technology partners namely desktop virtualisation vendor Citrix, storage vendors EMC and NetApp, virtualisation player VMware, and thin client vendors Wyse and Igel - announced the launch of its desktop virtualisation system and
solutions.

Dinesh Malkani, MD, Collaboration, APAC, Cisco, said desktop virtualisation can reduce per-user PC support costs by 51 per cent, an item that accounts for 67 per cent of PC related expenses.

“Virtual desktops also help protect the security of corporate intellectual property by keeping information in a data centre rather than on physical devices,” he said.

Cisco's new desktop virtualisation solution, called Cisco Virtualisation Experience Infrastructure (VXI), incorporates Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View 4.5, desktop virtualisation software offering from Citrix and Vmware, also supports management and security application storage systems from EMC, NetApp and Microsoft applications.

The Cisco VXI supports a wide range of endpoint devices including Cisco unified IP phones, laptops, business tablets including the Cisco Cius and smartphones. Devices from thin client vendors such as Wyse, Devon IT and Igel have been validated for it.

Cisco also announced that its tablet, Cisco Cius, will be enabled with virtualised desktop capabilities at launch via the introduction of newly designed client applications from Citrix, VMware and Wyse.

Cisco introduced two Cisco Virtualisation Experience Clients (VXC) devices, Cisco VXC 2100 and Cisco VXC 2100, that the company claims will offer desktop virtualisation capabilities in 'zero client' form in tandem with Cisco Unified Communications.

The Cisco VXI solution is now available, whereas, the Cisco VEC devices are scheduled to be available in march 2011. Cisco Cius, which will be using Android OS and support VMware View, Wyse PocketCloud and Citrix receiver, will be also launched during the same period along with Cisco VXC.
