CIOL Twitter opens applications for verified accounts to everyone

Twitter is opening the little blue checkmark that we see on certain Twitter profiles, signifying, the account is authentic to the entire public. This means that any user can request for a verified account by filling out a form with a verified phone number and email address, a profile photo, and additional information regarding why verification is required or helpful.

"We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification," Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter's vice president of User Services explained in a press release. "We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience."

The blue badge icon has so far been awarded only to big names in media, sports, businesses or public figures and brands. In defining who will get approved, Twitter still says "an account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest."

Twitter was the first platform to introduce account verification, starting in 2009 and currently has close to 187,000 verified accounts. An open application process makes sense, especially when even larger entities such as WikiLeaks can fall for spam requests for verification and several personalities, aside from the 187,000 verified accounts out there, that yet to have been verified.

The application process will start rolling out today and be available globally this week.
