ZTE sells 10-mn handsets in India

MUMBAI: Chinese telecom equipment major ZTE Corp. has sold over 10 million handsets in India, making the country its second largest market after China in the world.

The sales include that of both CDMA and GSM handsets that were mainly sold through service providers in the country.

"The company has taken advantage of the enormous opportunity in India, which is the fastest growing telecom market in the world. We have been investing in handsets R&D for almost a decade, which lead to the sales of 10 million handsets in India," said He Shiyou, senior vice president, ZTE.

The company, which already has an R&D centre in Bangalore, is also planning to invest in handset R&D. For the Indian operations, ZTE has manufactures the equipment from its facility at Gurgaon, near New Delhi.

ZTE Telecom India, a subsidiary of the Chinese major, CEO Huang Da Bin said that the company is looking at increasing its presence in the country.

The Chinese handset-maker, which is selling mobile phones mainly through service providers like Reliance Communications, Tata Indicom and Vodafone-Essar among others, would also look at selling directly in the country.

To date, ZTE has sold 60 million handsets in over 70 countries and regions. It is one of the mainstream suppliers of many leading and large global telecom operators including Vodafone, Hutchison, Telefonica.
