Zomato Food Delivery boy tests Corona Positive

A Pizza delivery boy in Delhi had been showing Coronavirus symptoms for the past 20 days. Seventy-two families of South Delhi have been placed under quarantine after he was tested positive. In 20 days, he had delivered to these 20 families. Additionally, 17 delivery boys have also been put under quarantine. He had visited some hospitals as well. Although the delivery of food, essentials and groceries have been allowed to operate by the Government of India, this incident has cast a shadow of doubt on home deliveries.

Zomato has denied the news which started doing the rounds on 11th April. The message was that a food delivery made by a “Zomato guy” at an address in Shivalik, Malviya Nagar, has led to the family at the said address being quarantined after the delivery person tested positive for COVID-19. Turns out, he wasn't, but still, Zomato issued a statement.

"COVID-19 could happen to anyone - and it is nearly impossible for all of us to completely isolate ourselves, especially when we need outside support for essentials such as food," stated Zomato. It also said that none of their riders would and should continue working if they know they are infected with COVID-19.

After it was known that the last thing he delivered was an order from Domino's Pizza, the company has stated that the delivery boy was not from Domino's.

Many people have complained that the "Zomoto guys" delivering them food, were not wearing masks.

On Wednesday, the online food ordering platform rolled out a feature which allows users to track the body temperature of their food delivery partner on the app. Available on the order tracking screen, this feature will capture the temperature checked before the delivery partner picks up an order for delivery.

Even the pizza chain said that they are taking every precaution possible to prevent the spread of the coronavirus such as screening employees every day, deep sanitising restaurants and delivery boxes, hot bags and bikes.

Zomato had earlier said that it offers COVID-19 insurance to its delivery partners- Zomato’s Delivery Partner Insurance Plan. It earlier covered hospitalization only, but now also covers lost earnings, in case a delivery partner gets infected by COVID-19.
