LOS ANGELES: Yahoo Inc., increasing its efforts to reach out to small businesses, said it would make free tools available to its Web-site hosting customers allowing them to build their own professional-quality sites.

Yahoo said SiteBuilder, based on Java software, will let users drag-and-drop different elements to create a business Web site.

The Web hosting program, with three plans ranging from $11.95 to $39.95 per month, is one of the many subscription services Yahoo has pushed into over the last two years as it moved to diversify its revenue stream beyond its original advertising-supported model.

"The customer needs are 'make it easy,'" said Rich Riley, vice president and general manager of Yahoo's small-business operations. "It's very much designed for someone who has no programming experience at all."

Riley said some of Yahoo's beta testers of the software have published their Web sites in less than an hour using the downloadable application.
