WASHINGTON, USA: Starting from December 25, 2009 to January 1, 2010, Internet major Yahoo's offices will remain closed except for 'essential functions', even as the company is in search of new ways to cut costs during the recession.

A Wall Street Journal report said, citing Yahoo spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek, that the move marked Yahoo's first mandatory world-wide shutdown. However, Lengkeek said, 'essential functions' like customer support, will be working during the shutdown. Yahoo has required most of its 13,200 employees to use vacation time or unpaid leave during the holidays.

Executives at Yahoo have been on an aggressive cost-cutting campaign since the start of the year, laying off nearly 700 employees in the spring and shutting down duplicative products.

Other Silicon Valley companies routinely close during the holiday season. As in previous years, Adobe Systems Inc. and Apple Inc plan to this year shut down from December 24 to January 1, the report said.
