PALO ALTO: Yahoo! Inc. on Monday opened its news music destination, Launch, featuring 7,000 music videos, artists interviews and Internet radio.

The company, which acquired Launch last spring plans to eventually enhance the service through its partnership with Pressplay -- an online music joint venture between Vivendi Universal's Universal Music and Sony Corp -- which should provide access to a larger selection of songs, and offer the ability to download or burn them into CDs.

Dave Golberg, general manager of music at Yahoo, Monday said it was still not clear when the Pressplay service would open, but said Yahoo did not consider Pressplay critical to its Launch service.

In addition to providing a broad selection of music and music-related content, Yahoo hopes to eventually add premium services on Launch. It is also pursuing advertising and other promotional opportunities for artists and record labels.

Softbank, Yahoo Japan to start phone service

TOKYO: Japanese Internet investor Softbank Corp and its subsidiary Yahoo Japan Corp said on Tuesday that they would launch cut-rate Internet telephone services next spring using their broadband networks.

Softbank said it would offer uniform rates of 7.5 yen (about six cents) per three minutes to any destination in Japan and abroad, sharply undercutting telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) and other competitors.

Users would also have to pay a 390 yen basic monthly charge.

Softbank and Yahoo Japan sent shock waves through Japan's Internet access industry earlier this year when they launched a cut-rate asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) Internet service at about 3,000 yen a month that was about four times faster than NTT's existing ADSL service.
