World Bank invests in Chennai

CHENNAI: International financial institution major, World Bank is planning to set up its own campus for its BPO operations in Chennai. This probably would be the first campus of their own in the country. Operating from a Raheja Towers office until now, the premier financial institution is planning a 60,000 sq ft campus in the city. Kicked off with a workforce of 80 people in 2001 the bank currently employs 180 members as of now. With the new facility expected to commence operations in the next 12 to 13 months, the number of employees is also expected to increase significantly.



It is also considering scaling up its back end process activities to analysis activities. The Chennai center, which until now had been handling only the processing activities, plans to move up the value chain. "Our confidence level has grown following our experience with Chennai where till now only processing work was being done," said World Bank VP & Controller, Fayezul Choudhry.



"We have complex portfolios which has to be audited every month. This is one area, which we are planning to move to India in two years time. Initially, we were cautious, but now we are looking at how to utilize India. There is a change in the mindset," he added.
