Dr Kalam was inaugurating the Bangalore chapter of the Project Management National Conference 2011 hosted by Project Management Institute (PMI) here on Thursday.

He also asked the PMI to discuss energy independence in India.

“For every litre of petrol, each vehicle generates 2 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2). Each year, a total of 30 billion tons of CO2 is generated, severely damaging the atmosphere. We must realise that we are importing CO2 along with oil that we are purchasing form other countries. So I request chief ministers of all the states to work towards making our country a carbon-neutral state,” he said.

He further said project management must be used to make a better India. “Project managers can bring in a lot of changes in the country. They can promote energy independence in India. We have been promoting energy independence in the last several years. We should graduate from fossil fuel to solar power, wind power, hydro power and bio-fuel so that the amount of carbon dioxide being generated can be reduced.”

Dr Kalam said that in today's world, creativity and competitiveness are the keys to success. “We should keep in mind that what worked yesterday will not work today. Today, knowledge is power and we should provide quality education to our children in order to make them more creative, competitive and honest.”

The 'Missile Man of India' also shared his professional experience with the audience. “My working experience with various space organizations in the country has taught me so many things. It helped me shape my leadership qualities,” he said.

“A leader must have a vision and possess the capability to translate his vision into action. He should also know how to manage success and failure and should have the courage to take tough decisions. Every action of the leader must be transparent. Only a creative leader can handle the success and failure alike,” he concluded.

The three-day conference is aimed at providing a common networking platform for thousands of professionals across all industries to participate actively in nation building.
