The reason being the company has developed a keen interest in big data, is therefore expanding data centers—either by acquiring new or upgrading existing ones.

Take for instance the speculation which is rife that the investor is a strong contender to buy India's Tata Communications' data center business.

The company remained tight-lipped about its bigger Tata Communications data center deal, pegged at $700 million or Rs 4,421 crore. "We don't comment on market rumors please wait for an official statement," said a company spokesman, who did not rule out the possibility of the acquisition.

Meanwhile, the company affirmed that it has invested $40 million in Datameer, a big data analytics and visualization company based in San Francisco, California.

In Datameer, STT will focus on building and growing innovative communications, media and technology (CMT) businesses. The investment in Datameer will allow STT to participate in the attractive growth potential in big data while enabling Datameer to tap on STT's deep market insights, partnerships and existing portfolio businesses to accelerate its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region and globally, the company said in a prepared statement.
