MUMBAI, INDIA: Wipro has acquired the mobile TV unit of Finland-based mobile phone manufacturer Nokia and this could be a smart move on both Nokia's and Wipro's sides, feels an F&S analyst.

“As a predominantly cellular appliance company, Nokia's objectives are now more straight-laced and focused on its main business. The mobile broadcast division caters more towards telecom service providers than consumers themselves and that makes it a more ideal fit for Wipro,” opines Vidya S. Nath, senior industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan, a leading research firm.

As to Wipro, like its other Indian peers, Infosys, TCS, HCL and Cognizant, it is garnering strength in providing consulting, system integration and services to media service providers worldwide, she adds.

“NSN's Mobile TV acquisition will enable it to pitch its services better with a horde of application delivery platforms especially for telcos."

The Mobile Broadcast Solutions division of Nokia, the unit employed around 40 people, is mainly responsible for developing software and hardware to enable mobile TV technology on the phone. The company had sold its unit as it planned to focus on the consumer side of the mobile TV business.

The mobile television and on-demand video did not gain much popularity among the people.

As per a news release, Wipro currently offers mobile software-product-realization and consulting services to Forum Nokia community members. Its services can be provided either from India or from any of its global locations.

It is also a Symbian Platinum Partner and a Symbian Competence Center.
