Wipro launches in-house testing facility

BANGALORE, INDIA: Wipro Technologies, a global provider in IT services, opened on Thursday its new product qualification and compliance certification facility, 'Tarang', in Bangalore.

Former President of India, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam inaugurated the facility in the presence of Azim H Premji, Chairman, Wipro Ltd.

Commenting on the launch of Tarang, Dr. Kalam, said, "I am glad that Wipro has established this facility at the right moment. Wipro's System would enable the development of competitive products along with certification."

He added that Tarang should be able to provide robustness in quality and add value.

This new facility is aimed to help Wipro's clients to develop robust products, meet the market demands, and help them reach the market in time, and provide cost benefits.

Tarang is equipped with capabilities for product design centers and manufacturing organizations across the globe.

Azim Premji, chairman, Wipro Ltd, said, "India's investment in R&D is yet inadequate. This investment is very critical to business, as it allows to differentiate between products and services, address the need and demand of customers.

He further added that many companies such as Wipro, Mahindra and TATA are serious in R&D. Wipro has stepped up the investment in R&D and, unlike other companies, it has built up its base from it."

Girish Paranjpe, Joint CEO and member of the Board, Wipro Limited, said, "This facility is aimed to meet the stringent demands of the globe and our customers.”

He further added that they have developed this facility, keeping in mind about their engineers, who can now get the products tested and certified in-house, without depending on the third-party testing facilities in the US.

Tarang would provide a one-stop for solution offering consultancy, pre-compliance testing and certification services for various geographies in the areas of EMI/EMC, mechanical, thermal, acoustic, safety and reliability.

The facility is equipped to test electronic products in the aerospace, automotive, computing, consumer electronics, industrial automation, medical electronics and telecommunication industries.

The company plans to invest about $10 million in this new facility. It expects an ROI within next three to five years.

Wipro also said that it would hire a few people for this facility.

Further talking about launching a new service during the times of economic slowdown, Paranjpe said that the facility got ready recently and they wanted to bring in when it was ready.

He added that they are seeing the economic situation already stabilizing and are expecting upturn by second half of this year.
