Wipro to enter thin-client market

BANGALORE: After Compaq, Wipro is now entering the thin-client market. The company is all set to launch its thin-client series `Wipro NetXs’ by June, 2000.

Speaking about the Wipro NetXs D Balasubramanian, Product Manager-Workstations, Computers and System Integration, said, " The Wipro NetXs provides embedded browser and X11R6 protocol support for Unix X applications. Incorporating the RDP and ICA protocols, the Wipro NetXs family supports Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0-Terminal server edition, Windows 2000 server family and Citrix Metaframe. Wipro NetXs can be used for all Windows and Unix applications in various areas including office productivity, Internet access and e-mail. The new thin-clients come with support for stereo sound video, 10/100 Base T Ethernet interface, integrated TCP/IP for both fixed and DHCP IP addressing, a high-speed graphics engine to support any standard SVGA monitor and built-in terminal emulations."

Commenting about the key features, he said that Remote Administration Suite and Smart Card Support are the two key features in Wipro NetXs. Remote Administration Suite is a standard feature across the family and facilitates remote terminal configuration and firmware updates using TCP/IP protocol. Smart Card support provides a highly secure user authentication tool, and is an optional feature on all Wipro NetXs models.

Speaking about the business opportunities, Subramanian said, "Thin-clients are not going to replace the PCs. It is a niche of its own. But, there is no specific data on thin-client market. Last year, around 1500 thin-clients was sold in India. This year according to the market conditions, it is estimated that India market will go for around 10,000 units of thin-client this year."

Wipro is targeting Corporates, Education, Banks and Government departments for these thin-clients. The company is releasing four models; Wipro NetXs 10, Wipro NetXs 20, Wipro NetXs 30 and Wipro NetXs 40. The price is ranged between Rs 18000 to Rs 22,500 without monitor. Wipro plans to sell around 3000 thin-clients this year.
