Microsoft has stated that the Windows 8 will be available in four editions - Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows Enterprise and Windows RT (for ARM processors). While Windows 8 is the default recommendation for most consumers, those looking for a broader set of features like updated Windows Explorer, Task Manager, and better multi-monitor support, should opt for Windows 8 Pro.

Windows RT also adds support for the ARM processor architecture in addition to the previously supported x86 microprocessors from Intel, AMD and VIA.

According to the Windows Design Team, Windows 8 has been "reimagined from the chipset to the user experience," whereas Windows 7 was intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line.

Microsoft reported that it has sold more than 630 million licenses of Windows 7 since it went public in 2009.
