Windows Azure Storage escapes leap year bug

BANGALORE, INDIA: Technology major Microsoft assured that the Azure cloud platform outage that hit on Wednesday has however let Windows Azure Storage go scot free and is not impacted by this issue. The company also said that the whole issue has been sorted out.

In a post on Windows Azure Blog, the cloud provider said: "The Windows Azure Service Management outage that began the evening of February 28th PST has been resolved and all regions and related services are now healthy."

In the post, Bill Laing, corporate VP, Server and Cloud, Microsoft, who leads the engineering organization responsible for the Windows Azure service, apologised for the outage and pointed out that a software bug had possibly triggered the glitch.

"While final root cause analysis is in progress, this issue appears to be due to a time calculation that was incorrect for the leap year. The fix was successfully deployed to most of the Windows Azure sub-regions and we restored Windows Azure service availability to the majority of our customers and services by 2:57AM PST, Feb 29th," he added..
