A recent study conducted by IDC (India) Ltd. reveals, that the Wireless in
local loop (WILL) technology can impact the mobile services potential in the
metro cities. In the technology adoption chain, as many as 19% households fall
under the early adopter category (i.e. those who will definitely go for
this technology) and 33% are positively inclined (i.e. those who
probably will go for this technology) towards this new technological
innovation. Further 57% of the potential mobile service users, state that
they would adopt the WILL technology. Hence WILL as a technology can
impact the mobile services potential in the metro cities.
WILL is a technology that is creating lot of anxiety amongst the mobile
operators of India. The reason is quite evident, WILL is a technology that
enables a user to make and receive calls within a radius of 40 kms. A
technology, that is in the similar league as mobile telephony.
Some of the other findings of this study are as follows:
- Awareness of WILL is higher in Delhi as compared to Mumbai
- Clarity of voice rather than price seems to be factor on which most of the
potential WILL adopters would evaluate this technology - The typical profile of a potential WILL adopter is a married male aged 35
years who has 5 members in his household

About the Study
IDC(India) Ltd conducted a research to assess the adoption of WILL amongst
the SEC (socio economic classification) A and B households of the two major
metros of India i.e. Delhi and Mumbai.
As part of this research study IDC contacted a random distributed sample of
216 households in these two cities. The households were further divided into
four categories, these were those having a telephone, those intending to get a
telephone connection, those having a mobile phone and those intending to get a
mobile phone.
