Will RoI come from seamless connectivity?

NEW DELHI, INDIA: With the upcoming results of the 3G auction, industry dynamics are set to undergo a sea change, some of which has been already been implemented in terms of low-cost GPRS enabled handsets, increase in LBS, high-end, software based apps, social networking voice and video chat, M2M applications and other forms of precision or targeted advertising.

While applications will contribute the most to the transition of voice to data increase-not only due to 3G, but also as a solution to tariff wars and falling ARPUs-the question to be asked is whether more software apps in low-cost handsets would be preferred by end consumers over seamless connectivity with the existing options, even if they be 2G.

This question is also important in the wake of Trai's plans to hike rates for excess 2G spectrum, and given the fact that many greenfield operators will not win 3G airwaves.
