WhatsApp shows status error, worried users take to online forums

BANGALORE, INDIA: If you are one of them, who completely trusts  the highly popular free messaging and file sharing application WhatsApp, you would have come across a peculiar problem today. The users' status message is being displayed as ''Error: Status unavailable''. The problem, which seems to have started a few hours ago has created a lot of panic.

Users of WhatsApp have taken to social media and are asking people if everyone is facing the same problem. ''I can't seem to view others' statuses on whatsapp . Is it me or its happening on everyone's phone?'' asks one such user on Twitter. ''Someone please tell me why is this happening on whatsapp? Or is it just happens to me?,'' says another. But, the problem now is that chain messages are being sent saying

''Whatsapp is shutting down on 28th jan Message from Jim Balsamic (CEO of Whatsapp) we have had an over usage of user names on whatsapp Messenger. We are requesting all users to forward this message to their entire contact list. If you do not forward this message, we will take it as your account is invalid and it will be deleted within the next 48 hours. Please DO NOT ignore this message or whatsapp will no longer recognise your activation. If you wish to re-activate your account after it has been deleted, a charge of 25.00 will be added to your monthly bill. We are also aware of the issue involving the pictures updates not showing. We are working diligently at fixing this problem and it will be up and running as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation from the Whatsapp team..:) FINAL WARNING! If your WhatsApp status is error:status unavailable then you are not frequent user and by 5:00pm C.A.T WhatsApp will start charging you. To become a frequent user send this message to 10 people who receive it.''

The 'hoax messages' seem to have infuriated users all the more. ''This Whatsapp chain message is more annoying than all those forward mails of 2004-7 put together!,'' tweets a frustrated user. ''guys... dont be so gullible... the whatsapp chain message is a stupid hoax,'' tweets another.

However, the actual reason for the problem has been given by what seems to be the official WhatsApp accounts on Twitter and " target="_blank">Facebook. ''WhatsApp status functionality is currently not available. We are working on resolving it soon,'' says the message. Although, it's yet to be seen when the problem will get fixed.
