WeChat comes to India

NEW DELHI, INDIA: One of the leading Internet services companies of Asia, Tencent has today introduced WeChat application in India. It facilitates text and broadcast messaging, video and picture sharing, contacts exchange and hold-to-talk voice message.

WeChat is a free service and has been developed by Tencent. It supports various mobile platforms such as Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows, but is not available on BlackBerry platform.

Tencent International Product Centre head Dennis Hau said that WeChat is all about fun and newer way to communicate. "It has features like asynchronous push-to-talk voice chat, animated emoticons and customized chat background," he said.

The company, Hau said has reached a benchmark with 100 million registered users in March, 2012. "It took Twitter 1400 days and Facebook 1600 days to achieve same milestone," he added.

We will introduce more additions of more social elements to WeChat with localized content, Hau said. The company, he informed has a lot of traction in the Indian market, and is focusing on user acquisition currently.

Rahul Razdan, president at ibibo mobile and gaming, said that they are aiming to be one of the most popular mobile social apps in India. "WeChat app stands for its innovative mobile-based social sharing and secure communication platform," added Razdan.

This application is available in English, Chinese Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese languages. It supports up to 40 individuals and is available for download. The iOS version of WeChat is also available in Hindi.

Tencent is one of the largest market players in China and has 721 million users globally. The company posted USD 4.5 billion earning in 2011.
