PUNE: With the installation of its 3G compatible network in its Delhi circle, Idea Cellular has kicked off EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) services commercially.

Idea Cellular will offer live television to all the postpaid and prepaid subscribers on their EDGE-enabled mobile handsets in Delhi and NCR region. This will be the country's first and fastest mobile data network, a company statement mentioned.

Idea Cellular Ltd CEO, Vikram Mehmi said, "All the 500+ base stations in our Delhi network are the latest generation BTS, and hence we are able to pioneer the data revolution by offering EDGE in this country." "We will rollout EDGE based networks across other circles of Idea within the next few weeks," he added.

According to the company, with enhanced data download rates of over 160 kbps offered by EDGE technology, subscribers of Idea will now be able to enjoy live television on their handsets and get continuous and real-time feed of news and entertainment from TV channels while on the move.

Idea subscribers will also be able to watch movie previews, do multimedia messages with video attachments, web-infotainment, high-speed video downloads, java game downloads and other Internet based multi-media experiences on their EDGE enabled mobile phones.

The other EDGE based services that are available to Idea customers are Internet surfing, mobile web browsing, video streaming and multimedia messaging.
