BANGALORE: Enterprise users in India are looking forward to have a look at Windows Server 2003. To assist them have a closer look, Microsoft has even arranged a road show across the country for the potential users. Although companies have shown earnest interest in knowing more about the product, there is no visible excitement about buying or shifting to Windows Server 2003, from the present Windows Server 2000.

When contacted by CIOL, Enterprise users in Bangalore showed keenness in finding out what more the product had to offer. They pledged their ignorance on any details about the product. "We do not have any clue about the product or its features. On May 2nd it is to be showcased in Bangalore and we have been invited," commented, Jose Joseph, Dy. Manager-IT, Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited.

Agreeing with him was S Thomas Suresh Anand, CTO of Wep Peripherals Limited, adding, "The enhancement of features from Windows Server 2000 will hold the key for any decision on changing to Windows Server 2003. As of now we are unaware of the new features in the new product."

Most of the companies have deployed Windows Server 2000 just about a year ago and are apprehensive to migrate to the new version immediately. "It depends on the usability of the software. We are comfortable with Windows Server 2000 as of now. Any migration would happen only if it were necessary for any application to run only on the Windows Server 2003," asserted Anup Kumar Gupta, IT Manager, Fosroc Chemicals (I) Private Limited. Apparently the company deployed Windows Server 2000 just about six months back when it implemented a ERP solution and it was inevitable to migrate to the Windows 2000 server. "The migration to Windows Server 2003 is imminent and certainly the road ahead. But it would depend on the organisation’s need," he added.

Speed and Security are the two most important features that KL Srinivasa Rao, Manager-Systems, Fouress Engineering (I) Limited is looking forward to experience in the new version of the Windows Server. "These two features could well determine the decision to migrate from 2000 to 2003. However any migration would happen six months after the launch as most of the companies would engage in wait and watch policy," opined Rao.

As the roadshows has got the users excited to have a first hand experience of Windows Server 2003, it is only a matter of time before enterprises gradually migrate from Win Server 2000 to Win Server 2003 for its features.
