BERLIN: The VoIP World is the first time the IFA 2006 will be presenting a special show that focuses on Voice over IP for companies and households. In doing so it is following a technology trend that has long since established itself as a growth market with businesses and which increasingly is now capturing the market for private households.

For Germany the international market researchers IDC are forecasting that by 2007 the market volume for VoIP solutions will have risen to 528 million US dollars, and are predicting an annual growth rate of around 70 per cent. In Germany alone there are nearly 40 Internet companies offering VoIP services, which include many attractive solutions for private customers.

Phone calls over the Internet are significantly less costly, which for a long time has also benefited private customers. In the corporate world the migration towards VoIP not only makes economic sense, it also represents the next logical step up on the technology ladder: data movements and phone calls take place over a single, uniform network, rendering complicated parallel structures superfluous.

VoIP is of particular benefit to private users making long-distance calls, for example to family members abroad, finally doing away with exorbitant monthly phone bills. VoIP offers even more: already there are VoIP mobile phones which can transmit moving images over the internet, around the world if desired, letting grandma in Germany see her favourite grandchild in America every day, and almost free of charge.

With the help of special gateways, calling over the Internet works using a normal telephone. It even functions with mobile end devices, which contact WLANs, which from the outside are barely distinguishable from the mobile phones currently in use. The standard bandwidths of today’s Internet connections are amply capable of guaranteeing clear, uninterrupted voice transmissions without any time lag.

The VoIP World will also feature a series of lectures covering a wide range of topics. On the VoIP World stage experts from all over Germany will be presenting the latest trends and interesting tips on the subject of Voice over IP. Prize draws taking place three times a day and giving away attractive prizes to do with VoIP communications will round off the VoIP World 2006.
