JOHANNESBURG, S.AFRICA: Vodafone Spain has appointed former Vodacom South Africa managing director Shameel Joosub as its chief executive.
Vodafone owns 65 per cent of South Africa's Vodacom Group, the country's biggest mobile phone operator.
Joosub, 39, who has run Vodacom South Africa for about five years, will assume his new position from April 1.
He holds an MBA from University of Southern Queensland in Australia.
Vodacom South Africa is the biggest unit in Vodacom Group, and contributed 25.6 billion rand ($3.77 billion) in revenue to its parent for the six months to end-September.
Vodacom chairman Peter Moyo said he had started to look for a replacement for Joosub.
Joosub has been with Vodacom Group for 16 years, having joined the company in March 1994, the year it was launched. During his tenure at Vodacom, he was also the managing director of Vodacom Service Provider.
He is also a founder of Vodacom Equipment Company, the mobile handset distribution company in the Vodacom Group.
