Virgin Mobile launches GSM services in India

BANGALORE, INDIA: Virgin Mobile, a global telecom player which has so far been in CDMA space in India, today announced the launch of GSM service, starting from all five southern circles. “Now we are in GSM too,” said MA Madhusudhan, CEO Virgin Mobile India, introducing a new tariff plans for the service.

With the new tariff plan, the Virgin subscribers in all the southern circles will be able to make STD and local calls at 20 paise per minute to all Virgin Mobile numbers without any pack. Cross network calls from Virgin will be charged at 40 paise and 50 paise per minute for local and STD calls respectively.

Virgin Mobile also announced that cine actors Ranbir Kapoor and Genelia D'Souza have been appointed as the new brand ambassadors for the company.

Like its already existing CDMA service, Virgin's GSM service also will be provided over the network of Tata Teleservices.

“The TTSL-Virgin Mobile association has got stronger with the launch of the brand in GSM. I am confident of the fact that Virgin will garner 10 per cent market share in the urban youth segment and its foray into GSM space will further spice up the mobility market,” said Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Teleservices.

“With the GSM launch, we intend to stir the GSM space with ten firsts, which include some innovative VAS offering,” said Madhusudhan. He said out of the total number of users Virgin adds every month, 50 per cent are youth. However, he would not give any details on the number of subscribers that the brand currently has.

Virgin has also introduced an itemized bill for its customers without any extra cost, which they can access from Virgin Mobile website.

Sir Richard Branson, chairman and founder of Virgin Mobile, said in a message sent on the occasion of the launch, “The Virgin Mobile brand in India has created distinct benchmarks in the youth segment. The success of the brand will now be leveraged further with the launch of its GSM service, bringing the youth an international mobile telephony experience.
