What Google describes as “an experiment,” looks more like what Instagram Stories did with Snapchat Stories, only a little less. Here, the party involved with Google is none other than PokemonGo.

With the wild popularity of Pokemon Go, smartphone users have never been more driven to get out of their homes and go explore the real world. Google's Creative Lab internal division is taking forward the same concept, but this time with kids instead of adults.

Google today released a new application - Verne: The Himalayas - designed to get kids to explore the world using maps and 3D imagery. Taking the advantage of the Google Maps, the new app brings 3D imagery of the Himalayas with a bit of gameplay to make the idea of zooming around the 3D scene more fun and appealing.

Instead of Pokemon's, you will find Verne, who is a friendly character- a 500-foot Yeti that kids can use to move around the map scenes. The Yeti can do things like climb up to the top of Mt. Everest, go skating on icy lakes, chase yaks, ride a jetpack, play Himalayan instruments, and more.

Even though it shares no real connection with Pokemon Go, Google’s new app is similar in that it gives you the ability to explore the world in an entirely new way.

Though Verne: The Himalayas is not quite a game, it could be both a useful and entertaining education tool. For instance, a disembodied voice will point out little facts like “the Himalayas are the tallest mountain range in the world.”

Google's new experimental app can be a fun distraction too if you run out of Poke Balls in Pokemon Go.

“Verne: The Himalayas” is available on Google Play, as a free download for Android devices.
