McAdam will be next in line for the chief executive job at Verizon Communication, said the person, who asked not to be named as no official announcement had been made.

Verizon declined comment.

McAdam is currently chief executive of Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon and Vodafone Group Plc.

Verizon Wireless, the No. 1 US mobile operator, is planning to name Daniel Mead to its top job, replacing McAdam. Mead is currently chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless.

Ivan Seidenberg, who turns 64 in December this year, is expected to retire in 2011.

McAdam's new job is expected to become effective in the next month and could be announced as early as Monday, the person said.

The news follows the announcement last week that Verizon CFO John Killian plans to retire. Both Killian and McAdam had been contenders for the Verizon Communications CEO job, but Killian said he decided to retire for family reasons.
