BANGALORE: Veritas Software has released its latest version of NetBackup
Professional offering expanded backup and recovery capabilities, and additional
platform support to protect critical information stored on corporate desktops
and laptops. Called NetBackup Professional 3.5, it extends the portfolio of data
protection and disaster recovery solutions from Veritas.
"A company's data recovery strategy is not complete until it has secured
its IT environment, which includes the orderly recovery of hundreds or thousands
of desktops and laptops," said IDC’s research analyst, Fred Broussard.
"In our 2001 support survey, 53 per cent of the organizations surveyed
either didn't have a backup policy for individual end-users or told their
end-users to backup to mapped drives. These organizations need to closely
examine their desktop-to-data center data protection plans due to dependencies
on vast volumes of information for day-to-day operations."
"The latest version of Veritas NetBackup Professional enables IT
administrators to easily implement enterprise-class data protection for
thousands of desktop or laptop client computers from a single server. Veritas
NetBackup Professional 3.5 also offers administrators more flexibility,
extending its multi-platform support to Microsoft Windows XP and ME (Millennium
Edition) environments."
In addition, administrators can also configure Veritas NetBackup Professional
3.5 to migrate infrequently-used backup data stored on disk to off-line tape
storage. By moving seldom-used data to less expensive tape devices, companies
can reduce costs by freeing up critical disk space for optimal storage hardware
use. Backup activities occur in the background while corporate desktop and
laptop users continue operating without interruption.
"IT departments were once concerned only with backing up data from
company servers," said Veritas Software senior vice president of data
protection products, Neal Ater. "Businesses are now realizing that they are
equally vulnerable to data loss from laptops and desktops. It is essential that
companies implement a scalable "desktop-to-data center" protection and
recovery solution to minimize such risk."
