NEW DELHI: VeriSign Inc, one of the world's leading providers of Web
addresses, said on Tuesday it had tied up with Indian Internet portal Rediff.com
to offer personalized Web addresses to Indian individuals.
Arthur Chang, Asia Pacific region managing director of US-based VeriSign
subsidiary Network Solutions Inc (NSI), told a news conference VeriSign would,
with Rediff, offer Web addresses and e-mail addresses fully based on people's
names.
"Instead of having an e-mail address now as username@serviceprovider.com
people can have sername@username.com," Chang said by video conference from
Hong Kong. He said details of the tie-up and the service would be announced in
the next few weeks.
"I believe we are still getting quite a similar number or a small
percentage growth in the number of domain name (Web address) registrations in
India this year compared to last year," Chang said. He did not give
details. Earlier on Tuesday, Tarang Software, an Indian start-up specializing in
wireless and Internet software, said it had acquired the Indian unit of
electronic payment service firm CyberCash from VeriSign.
