BANGALORE: VeriFone, a division of Hewlett Packard Company, has announced the
next chapter in its multi-application e-payment platform–the Omni series
payment terminals. The terminals use the Internet and the Verix open operating
platform to deliver value-added e-services to the point of sale (POS). VeriFone’s
Omni 3300 series of payment terminals will provide an open channel for the
delivery of a rich variety of value-added services to merchants and their
customers.
VeriFone has also announced an alliance with PSINet Transaction Solutions, a
subsidiary of PSINet Inc., to provide Internet services for retailers worldwide
who use its POS terminals for Internet applications. It will also team up with Exite@Home,
the broadband online service provider with 2 million broadband subscribers and
77 million Exite network registered users. The two companies are planning to
supply new services and delivery channels to small businesses by linking the
online retail Exite Freetailer with brick and mortar retailers through VeriFone’s
Internet-enabled POS terminals.
The Omni 3300 and the Omni 3350 are designed to handle the performance
demands of the Internet. They offer a 32-bit processor and a 14.4Kbps modem,
with a print option at 12.5lps. They allow multitasking to speed the processing
of multiple applications. The terminals can process all forms of e-payment and
the Omni 3350 series feature a built-in smart-card reader.
"VeriFone is revolutionizing the point of sale by building upon the
strong foundation of our multi-application that capitalize on Internet
connectivity," said VeriFone product marketing director Stuart Taylor.
