According to Air Cmdr SS Motial (Retd),

CEO, ITI Ltd, the workforce has shown greater involvement and greater discipline in the

upliftment of the company. This is one distinct change nurtured in ITI Ltd. If one

remembers as to why ITI went into the red, despite having the best telecom experience, it

was because of its lack of perception of the new emerging market, want of a strong

management for strategy directions, absence of a dynamic leader and the burgeoning

manpower. But today, it appears that the ITI’s backyard is again set in order.

It has positioned itself as the total

telecom solutions provider and has begun to keep pace with technological and market

changes and dynamics. An interesting exercise was taken up in

1998-99, called Operation

"Pragati" for greater involvement of the workforce at all levels of decisions

and processes. As a result, it has managed to register the highest physical production, as

well as turnover, in its history. The physical production was worth Rs 1,601 crore and

sales of Rs 1,555 crore for the year ended March 1999. The switching production grew by 23

percent, digital radio by 13 percent, and optical fibre terminals’ production grew by

40 percent. While the SMPS systems increased by 157 percent, the telephone production

registered 13 percent growth. Air Cmdr Motial attributes the performance to advanced

planning of production schedules, sufficient orders from the DoT, optimal utilization of

capacities, and revitalized marketing, which emphasized on greater customer satisfaction.

The conferment of the "excellent performing public sector enterprise" award by

the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering on the company speaks about its

performance.

ITI has entered the current fiscal already

with orders worth Rs 1,000 crore according to company sources and the target for the

company this fiscal is Rs 2,000 crore. Plans are also afoot to reach a turnover of Rs

3,200 crore by 2001-02. The thrust will be on providing turnkey solutions for IT and

datacom," says Air Cmdr Motial. It will also be looking to increasing the export

orders. ITI has executed a number of turnkey jobs in countries like Bhutan, Jordan, Kenya,

Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, UAE, Uganda, and Yemen. As of now, it has orders worth Rs 10

crore and expects more. And the other target segments for it will be the Railways and the

power sectors.

ITI is diversifying into manufacturing of

electro-mechanical and electronic items for automotive/electro-mechanical/electronics

industry. Today, it is clearly focussing on retraining and redeployment as it is

positioning itself as a service provider to a service provider, with a clear focus towards

the next millennium. A restructuring plan is also expected by the year-end for which

consultants are being appointed. Air Cmdr Motial has launched another movement, Operation

"Nav Shatabdi", calling for increased "productivity, profitability, and

parivartan". Under this, the officers’ associations and employees’ unions

will jointly frame time-bound action plan for achieving the set targets.
