For the first time since the roll-out of the ambitious Indian government project, the nodal agency, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), has tied up with a private player to share its extensive database, which encapsulates the details of around 21 crore citizens.

Initially, the pilot project based on a Department of Telecom (DoT) directive that was launched on Wednesday would be implemented in Hyderabad (SP Road) and Vijayawada (Bandar Road) in Andhra Pradesh, it is learnt.

One can carry the Aadhaar letter to a Vodafone Store, which will scan the bar code on it and authenticate, before getting the fingerprints of the user to validate and issue a SIM card.

"When a subscriber shows his Aadhaar number, we will authenticate it by taking his or her finger impressions. This information will hit the UIDAI servers in Delhi for verification. Within no time, we will get authentication. This will significantly reduce the time and verification costs," T.V. Ramachandran, resident director, Regulatory Affairs and Government Relations, of Vodafone, has been quoted saying.

Soon, the service is expected to be extended to all 1,600 Vodafone stores all over India.
