US retailer to invest $50-m in India

BANGALORE: US-based Supervalu, a $44 billion grocery chain, announced the opening of its first software development center outside the United States in Bangalore.

The company has invested $50 million to set up its Indian subsidiary -Supervalu Services India. This center will house 300 people in the next 12-18 months.

Supervalu is the third largest grocery chain in the US having over 2500 stores.

Paul Singer, CIO, Supervalu, informed the media that the facility would focus on application development.

Supervalu also has ties with Indian IT majors like Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Cognizant.

Singer said that these engagements would continue and said that in future, it would look at adding BPO services to the center. Global Retail giants like Tesco and Target have already established their presence in Bangalore.

BV Naidu, director, STPI Bangalore, said that over 300 companies have expanded their operations in the city over the last six months. Around 95 new companies started their operations during the same period.
