UP govt orders 50 p.c. quota in pvt tech colleges

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government recently directed the UP Technical University (UPTU) to implement 50 per cent reservation for the Scheduled Caste/Tribes and the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in all privately-run engineering and management colleges.

The government took the decision based on the legal opinion that the quota is applicable on private technical institutes affiliated to UPTU because they all have given an undertaking to follow the rules set by the university and the state government.

The reservation was suspended after some private college owners approached the Allahabad High Court for a stay. Recently the Supreme Court had directed the High Court to finally dispose off the matter within the next four weeks, as the issue has affected the college admissions.
