Responding to the media reports that Britain is contemplating the idea of outsourcing the process of self-assessment tax returns and other sensitive information to India and effect a saving of £200 million, a spokesman for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said UK does not have any such plans right now.

"We currently have no plans to change this. HMRC is constantly looking at how it can provide better value for money to the taxpayer. Project Quantum is specifically focused on value for money in the IT field," he said.

Computer Weekly had claimed on Wednesday that "HMRC ministry and its main IT contractors Capgemini Fujitsu are looking at the potential of outsourcing some tax processing to India".
