Twitter starts rolling out voice DMs in India, Brazil and Japan

In early October 2020, Twitter had introduced a feature of voice tweet. Now, you can also send voice messages in DM on Twitter. The voice message feature will let you send a voice message through DM. Further, the company has said that the new voice DM will roll out to Twitter users in select countries in a phased manner. Currently, the feature is available to only select users in India, Brazil, and also Japan. However, it is still in testing mode and not a feature ready for mass rollout. The company has tweeted how to use the feature and its rollout:

Manish Maheshwari, MD, Twitter India announced the rollout. He said, "India is a priority market for Twitter. That is why we're constantly testing new features and learning from people's experience of the service here. We're excited to bring the voice messages in DMs experiment to the country and give people a new way to express themselves and help them connect through the nuances, emotion, and empathy built by hearing someone's voice.”

The feature will allow users to record their messages, very much similar to voice tweets. However, it is not clear whether the voice DM feature has a set limit like voice tweets. Also, since Twitter will roll out the feature in phases, not all Indians, Brazilians and Japanese people will get the new voice DM feature at one time.

To check if you have received the feature, update the app on iOS or Play Store and try sending a voice message. If you notice the mic icon on iOS, hold it to record and release it to send. On Android, tap the mic icon to record a message tap again stop recording. Android users can also listen to their message before sending it to other people through direct message.

In the top Social Networking platforms, only Twitter did not have the voice feature on the platform. Instagram was the last to roll out the feature in late 2018.
