LAS VEGAS, USA: Entropic, a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, and TVSTORM, Inc., a leading company for developing and providing Middleware solutions and embedded software products for digital broadcast, today announced the availability of an Android-based IP set-top box (IP-STB) with advanced features including Miracast functionality. The new device will be demonstrated at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Entropic's Meeting Suite at The Wynn Las Vegas from January 7-10, 2014.
The new IP-STB solution leads the global trend for open standards-based
solutions that offer low cost, high performance and highly-optimized
operating systems for embedded STB solutions. Through the
collaboration, TVSTORM developed and ported its Android Jellybean 4.2
software development kit (SDK) onto Entropic's advanced IP/hybrid
set-top box system-on-a-chip (SoC), the EN757x/8x; giving rise to a
powerful, cost-optimized Android-based STB that enables service
providers to generate revenue by offering a new array of IP-based
services and applications.
Demonstrating the power and flexibility of the Android SDK, the new
IP-STB supports Miracast as one of its key features. Miracast is a
peer-to-peer wireless screencasting standard that enables wireless or
wired delivery of High Definition (HD) video to or from computers,
tablets, mobile phones, and now STBs. Miracast allows a device to
securely send or receive 1080p HD video enabling consumers to watch
live programs from a STB on a tablet or 'echo' display HD content from
their mobile device onto a TV -- all in real-time.
"The new IP-STB reflects both TVSTORM's and Entropic's continued
Android community support, which has emerged as a preferred solution
for embedded systems with a very fast growing global market footprint."
said Dr. Ho-Yeon Jang, CEO of TVSTORM. "Our new IP-STB is an example of
how in working with Entropic, we have evolved set-top box technology to
enable operators the ability to generate greater revenue and provide
consumers true freedom to watch high-definition content on any device."
"There is a global movement where OEMs and service providers are
interested in adopting Android-based set-top box solutions that offer
high performance at a lower cost," said Roger Gregory, vice president,
Marketing, Entropic. "In working with TVSTORM we were able to meet
these requirements quickly by leveraging the Android SDK platform to
implement high functionality features, like Miracast. While this is
just one robust feature, the collaboration we conducted with TVSTORM
will greatly help operators worldwide to increase the velocity of
service deployment and overall average revenue per user."
