What went wrong with Proton and when did you realize that you need to modify it?

TVS Proton was designed in India for the world market. Certain pre-requisites were speed, lower cost of operation, ease of use and modern and progressive features. When we soft launched this product in select locations to test the first reactions, the response was nothing short of it becoming a rage in the market. The purchases happened beyond expectation and in segments beyond the targeted ones. It was proven to be excellent for the targeted applications fulfilling all promises i.e speed, cost, and ease of use and looks.

Based on the then present trends in IT Products, TVS Proton was designed with a USB port. However as this product launches were a major hit, TVS Proton was used for a wide variety of applications, some of which were not USB ready and needed installation support. This was provided through our service partners.

The new TVS Proton is now completely "Plug & Play" with the standard parallel port configuration. Now we are sure that our customers will find it much easier to install and operate the product and the initial launch in Mumbai has given us tremendous encouragement.

The new TVS Proton was launched in Mumbai on May 9, 2003 and since then we have had extremely good response as close to 850 printers have been sold in the last two weeks. The initial response from users has also been extremely satisfying.

When are you going to launch the product in the Hyderabad market?

We are planning for a phased launch all over the country. First, we want to complete the launches in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, where we have already received an overwhelming response. We are now working out on the supplies to fulfil the regional demand in Maharashtra. For those in Hyderabad, who are not USB ready, we have already arranged replacements.

After having experienced all this, what according to you should ensure that this kind of situation doesn't come up again? Are you going to increase your R&D efforts to ensure this?

TVS Proton features has been co-designed by our customers and we would continue to focus on customers and fine-tune the product to their needs as & when required. We need to continue to provide intensive training to the service partners and also work with a large number of software providers. We also have a very young & talented R&D Team, who can react to the market needs in double quick time.

After Hyderabad where else will Proton's latest avatar be launched?

It will be launched all over India, already we have requirements coming from all the states. In fact TVS Proton has been the chosen printer to be bundled with many other products. This is a win-win for the customers. We are also taking TVS Proton across the world, and would soon tie up with some global partners.
