Tsunami hits telecom networks in Japan

BANGALORE, INDIA: The powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 struck northeastern Japan on Friday, triggering a massive tsunami has seriously affected the communications network in the country. In may places like Tokyo and other cities, the telecom networks collapsed following the disaster.

Thirty minutes after the main quake mobile phone networks were not working in Tokyo, said a report. Another report also said that power outages in Tokyo has affected some 4 million homes.

Several nuclear plants along the coast were partially shut down, but there were no reports of any radioactive leakage.

Meanwhile Google has made its person finder service available in Japan, even as social media is hyper active in taking the news of disaster to the world. Google's service allows users to both request and post information about the safety of loved ones missing as a result of natural disasters.

As expected You Tube has many video footages uploaded that give a clear picture of the tragedy. Also, responding to catastrophe, netizens are actively updating their pages with then updates and also prayers and campaign on platforms like Facebook and Twitter and also personal blogs.

As per media reports, the undersea power cables have been damaged, which could take hold on the connectivity of calls made between China and Japan.
