CIOL: Is there a growing demand for bandwidth intensive applications among enterprises?
Yes, because the application used nowadays are so that a big enterprise requires extensive bandwidth. However, the shortage of bandwidth (or the glut of it) has often been the subject of discussion. There has been much concern about actual throughput and quality of service.
But connectivity becomes imperative when business grows and extends to multiple locations. And bandwidth becomes a focus area with the deployment of data-centric enterprise applications. In fact we feel that there has been an increase in bandwidth requirement.
CIOL: How do you compare the various methods for accessing broadband? Which one do you thing is suitable for enterprises?
The major connectivity options available today include ISDN, dialup, leased line, satellite, DSL, and cable. Of these ISDN, leased line and dialup are the most popular solutions. These technologies are well suited for voice calls and video conferencing.
Today DSL is commonly running and used by major enterprises.
In future, cable modem is likely to become predominant as to cover up the needs of data and digital signals.Dialup is also favored as a back-up connectivity solution, and is ideal for those who do not need always-on connections.
CIOL: Enterprises today are demanding value added offerings on top of pure bandwidth play. How true is this statement? What are those value added services?
Today, predominantly, voice and video applications are delivered as value added services. The broadband cost has come down to a large extend. This has led to an increasing demand for various communication solutions on broadband. Enterprises are also demanding more services through broadband.
Now, we are enjoying applications like IP Telephony and conferencing, managed services, bandwidth on demand, co-location and a lot more. As far as the service providers are concerned, they have enough options when in terms of services and applications for enterprises. It's a new opportunity for them to increase their revenue.
We, as an enterprise, believe that the service providers and vendors will keep offering such new services to enterprises. So, it's the right time for enterprises to make the full use of broadband applications.
CIOL: Does this happen the other way around, i.e. do voice and video applications drive the need for higher bandwidths among enterprises?
Higher bandwidth is required for better and effective performance of voice and video application used for communication among client/branches /remote location.
In the coming days we will see an increase in the convergence of voice, data and video services with a rapid growth in network traffic.
Overall, triple play is emerging as a big catalyst in the growth of enterprise broadband applications. However, technology is taking bigger shape very fast, and thus the broadband industry need to step up facilities and services to cater higher needs of Enterprise in near future.
