SAN FRANCISCO: Transmeta Corp., is unveiling "Efficeon," the brand name for its newest microprocessor, designed for laptops and other devices that need long battery life.

Previously, the Santa Clara, California company had called the chip, TM8000.

The Efficeon enables typical applications to run about 50 percent faster and multimedia applications up to 80 percent faster than the current Crusoe TM5800 chip, Transmeta said.

Computers and other devices based on the new chip are expected to be announced in the fourth quarter of this year, the company said, adding that major computer makers are evaluating the chip.
