Toshiba targets India's booming laptop market for growth

In order to further increase its Indian notebook market share, Toshiba Singapore's Computer Systems Division has announced the launch of six new notebooks in India. The company along with its mobile computing partner HCL Infosystems has also chalked out an aggressive retail strategy to achieve significant market share in the segment.





Toshiba has identified India as one of the key growth markets given its current stable political climate and business potential. Towards this end, the company has launched a series of products in India as part of its worldwide launch. The new line up includes the latest Satellite M40 series offering professional multi-media performance with wide screen Clear SuperView technology; Toshiba's PORTEGE S100 notebook which is the world's 1st thin and light notebook supporting RAID solution; PORTEGE M300 at the all-in-one reliable ultra portable at 1.58kg with system bumpers and spill resistant keyboard and Satellite R-10 — the new wide screen notebook with handwriting facility. The notebooks are priced in the range Rs 45,000 — Rs 1,50,000.





Toshiba, in partnership with HCL Infosystems, also intends to expand its direct accounts coverage, technical service centers, after-sales support and dealer channel networks in the country. Toshiba's retail presence in India would also be beefed up through concept stores called 'shopToshiba' and 'iShops'.





According to HCL Infosystems operations president Rajendra Kumar, the company is planning to increase the number of exclusive Toshiba shops to 20 in the next nine-12 months from the current three shops and the number of non-exclusive Toshiba shops to 80-100 in the next nine-12 months from the current 20.





To increase Toshiba's market share, in corporate HCL is focusing on segments like BFSI, education, SMB and retail. Currently Toshiba's share in the Indian notebook market is 10 percent. According to Kumar, with India's laptop market expected to grow over 100 percent this year, maintaining this market share itself would mean a much higher number this year.
