Toshiba announces 64 gigabytes SD card

TOKYO, JAPAN: Japanese company Toshiba Corp. announed the industy's largest SD memory card, a 64 gigabytes card that comes with SDXC specification.

The new SD card employs the UHS 104 high-speed interface to write data at 35 megabytes per second and to read data at 60MB per second.

The samples will be shipped this November and will be out in the market in the spring of 2010, expecting the device to retail for around 60,000 yen ($629.82).

Toshiba also announced that it will begin marketing next spring a pair of SD memory cards that comply with the existing SDHC specification, but boast industry-high read/write rates of 35MB per second and 60MB per second. These cards will come in a 32GB version for around 30,000 yen and a 16GB version for around 15,000 yen. Samples of both will begin shipping around the end of 2009 or the start of 2010.

The company said it plans to manufacture the three offerings at rates of around 10,000 units a month in 2010.
