LONDON: Tony Blair's wife Cherie has landed herself into a controversy after she put on sale the former British prime minister's autograph for 10 pounds on eBay, an auction website, a media report said Tuesday.

Cherie, 56, advertised a signed "bookplate" page which fits copies of Blair's autobiography "A Journey", The Sun reported.

It was originally offered for 25 pounds on the site but sold for a tenner on an account registered to the former first lady who Monday night admitted hawking her husband's signature.

However, Cherie, a part-time judge, offered a bizarre explanation about why she did it.

Her spokesman said: "Cherie Blair was cross that people were selling Tony Blair's signature when you can get one for free."

"She was trying to undermine the market and as soon as someone bought it, she refunded it straight away to make the point."

But the strange sale looked certain to spark huge embarrassment for the Blairs -- who are regularly accused of cashing in on the former premier's high office, the report said.
