LONDON: Network Rail announced the release of real-time train running data as part of a wider transparency initiative. Following a competitive selection process, Rockshore were selected to build and run the Data Feeds Service under a three-year managed service contract, adds a press release. The service provides citizens with access to a range of real-time data, which will be used to build web and mobile applications. The data is offered for free and comes with a liberal usage policy.

Nathan Day, Rockshore’s Business Development Director added, "“We have been working with Network Rail for many years on some of their more innovative projects and it’s great to be able to launch the Data Feeds Service, which was delivered in just 8 weeks.”

Mark Farrow, Network Rail’s Head of Transparency, added, “Network Rail is convinced that transparency leads to smarter decision making and greater accountability. Making data feeds available to developers and ultimately to passengers is a key part of our transparency programme and shows our commitment to sharing our information. The Data Feeds Service marks a significant milestone in making transport data available to a wider audience, which will drive more transparent, participatory and collaborative practice through unfettered information sharing.

The Data Feeds Service has been built using Rockshore’s Event Processing Platform (REPP) and is deployed in the Cloud to enable the service to scale flexibly in line with demand. The REPP, as claimed, powers many real-time systems in use across Europe that range from running major airports to helping the world’s largest mobile operators increase visibility and control of their operations.
