Profile: Titan is the result of an association of Tata Industries and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation. It is the world's sixth largest manufacturer brand of watches and India's leading producer of watches under the Titan and Sonata brand names and jewelry under the Tanishq brand. Its product portfolio includes watches, clocks, accessories and jewelry, in both contemporary and traditional designs. The company exports watches to about 32 countries around the world. It has manufacturing facilities in Hosur, Dehradun and Goa.

Titan has an extensive domestic distribution network and its retail chain of exclusive retail showrooms is called 'The World of Titan'. Currently there are 197 showrooms and multi-brand outlets named Time Zones with 118 outlets for watches. The Tanishq jewelry division has 84 boutiques.

Current IT infrastructure of the company: Titan's watch and jewelry manufacturing plants are located in Hosur. The manufacturing processes include micro precision operations (manufacturing of components and sub assemblies) hot and cold forging, stamping, injection molding and tool making.

The product development cycle is facilitated by state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology that enables seamless integration from aesthetic styling and 3D and solid modeling to engineering design, tool design, tool making and prototype making. In addition, part of its IT infrastructure in Bangalore, are a set of Unix-based servers for ERP as well as Intel based servers for all other processes. Also PCs as well as facilities like VoIP are part of the IT infrastructure.

Proposed IT infrastructure for 2007: Titan is planning on buying more state-of-the-art servers in the coming year in order to enable its smooth functioning. Upgradation of existing servers is also on the anvil.

Current systems suppliers: Titan buys directly from the vendors like IBM, HP, who then depute their solution providers to execute the order.

Qualities they look for in a supplier: Zero downtime is one of the core qualifications that Titan insists on. Therefore, their suppliers must ensure a trouble free performance for all equipments. Another criteria would be that suppliers must extend good service support as and when required.
