CHENNAI: The elected Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate from Chennai Central, Dayanidhi Maran has been appointed as the minister of communication and IT, in the newly formed Congress led Government under the leadership of Manmohan Singh. The 37-year old Harvard Business School graduate is the youngest son of ex-Union Commerce and Heavy Industries minister, late Murasoli Maran and grand nephew of DMK supreme M Karunanidhi.

A first timer for elections, Maran (Dayanidhi) entered politics following his father’s demise after a prolonged fight against heart ailments. He stood in the same constituency, Chennai Central, his father’s strong hold and won against AIADMK’s secretary, N Balaganga by over a lakh and thirty thousand votes.

Alumni of Chennai’s Loyola College, from where he earned his bachelors degree in economics, Maran looks after the Multi-System Cable Operator (MSO)-Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV), which is promoted by Sun TV Network. Apart from its success, he is also attributed with SCV’s success of being the first MSO in the country to embrace the controversial Conditional Access System (CAS) in Chennai.

Having been instrumental in establishing Sun TV Network as one of the largest cable operators in India, Maran is expected to churn his magic spell in marketing India Inc., to the world. As a user of technology, he clearly understands the intricacies of the industry and will try and leverage his international exposure to good effect in bringing some effective changes in policies for the benefit of the sector.

But even as this is being compiled, reports indicate that there might be a reshuffling in portfolios as DMK has indicated its displeasure in the allotment of ministries to its seven comrades. Maran, it is learnt, is meeting up with CPP party leader and Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh along with senior members of Congress party to ‘sort out the issues’. DMK Chief, Karunanidhi has announced that none of the party’s appointed ministers will take charge until the "mistakes" are "sorted out", referring to the assigned portfolios.

Its another wait and watch game.
