Targeted at the Windows Developers the contest is to encourage developers to program for .Net-to-Linux porting. The idea of the contest was the outcome of a survey conducted at The Code Project, which revealed a reasonably large number of developers used some open-source tool for their programming needs. The survey also revealed that the developers were keen at developing solutions that can run on Linux as well as Windows, with cost being a top-of-the mind concern with most of them.

Mainsoft's participation in the contest can be attributed to its interest in highlighting its tool, MainWin for J2EE Developer Edition codenamed "Grasshopper" that takes code compiled into Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) and then converts that into Java bytecode. The contestants are free to choose from Grasshopper, Mono or PHP to port the application.

The contest will be judged by a group of Code Project developers on IBM eServer xSeries server running SUSE Linux 9, and winners can take a Microsoft Xbox 360 for their prize. The first developer to submit the ported application for each race will win the Xbox, and the first developer to use Grasshopper for the application will win a Xbox game.
