Tellabs sets up software R&D center in India

NEW DELHI: Tellabs has inaugurated its software R&D center in Gurgaon,

its first in the Asia-Pacific region, with an approximate investment of $2.5

million. The new Gurgaon facility will serve as an international software

engineering hub for Tellabs’ optical networking development efforts that are

already underway. The development efforts will aim at leading carriers to the

next generation of communications.

Tellabs, which is essentially into the development of switching and

transmission products, will focus on developing transmission products in this

facility. Besides optical networking, some of the other technologies that the

center will focus on will be Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and

Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH). The center, which has already hired 30

developers, will increase its staff strength to 100 by the end of next year. Two

project teams of software developers are currently undergoing training in

Denmark and the US on product development processes and technologies.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Peter Viereck, VP & GM, Tellabs, Denmark,

said that his company has had a very positive experience with the Indian market

for the last 15 years and that there is immense respect for the capabilities of

Indian telecom companies and software professionals. India is now the

acknowledged nucleus for software talent across the world.

Tellabs has already been manufacturing switches in the country through

Fibcom, its joint venture with ITI. Founded in 1975, Tellabs today is a $2.3

billion, Fortune 500 company. Listed on the Nasdaq, it has more than 8,000

employees across 50 locations worldwide. Its major customers in the country are

the DoT, cellular companies and private basic service operators. According to

company officials, its switching product Focus has around 90 per cent share of

the Indian market.
