BANGALORE, INDIA: Anil Kumar Ravindran, senior vice-president, CyberMedia India Ltd, was among the first few to buy the iPad 1 in India soon after its launch.

Days after the warranty period was over, his iPad's display went blank. When he contacted an Apple service centre in Bangalore, they offered to replace the hardware for Rs. 18000 as their policy was not to take up hardware repairs. Further, he contacted a person he knew in Apple and the person said it can be fixed for a discounted price of Rs.14465.

Not convinced by the price, he checked online and found a non-Apple walk-in repair service station claiming 2000 satisfied customers. When he went there, serviceman Satinder opened the iPad right in front of Anil's eyes. To his astonishment, Satinder dusted off the interiors of the iPad with a toothbrush and then reassembled it.

So, the display was fine and the problem was fixed for just Rs. 500 ($10). Anil was happy to save Rs. 14,000 and Satinder was happy to have earned another customer.

Do you think Anil took the right decision? Agreed, it may not be very safe to compromise on cost when it comes to branded products, but there seems to be no harm in knowing these unknown servicemen offering transparent and value-for-money services.
