As a CIO, the main challenges that I face are handling scale, integration, continuously expanding capabilities as we build up, defining technological architecture as we grow and then deploying software solutions around the same.

Recently, we kicked off a relationship with Google and announced a SDP (Service Delivery Platform). Going forward, we are looking at offering SaaS (Software As A Service) for SMBs, managed application services and completely managed networks for enterprises.

From a traditional voice and data company, we are morphing into a media company with IPTV and DTH in our basket. We will continue to build upon the proposition of 'One Airtel'.

Virgin pockets in industry

We are exploring WiMax and have deployed WiFi in a big way. We are already rolling out an extensive NLD and submarine network. In future, we look at the evolution of Web 2.0 and its many applications. Possibilities are galore in new mobile applications like P2P (Person to Person) money transfer or turning mobile into a business or identity pass.

But is India ready?

The timing of these innovations in the industry is absolutely right. Once simplified, technology will take off to new heights. Look at the way, SMS has changed the industry. In the same way, instant messaging and information services will leap ahead.

Wish-list as a customer?

Software has to continuingly develop the ability of handling scale. SOA (Software Oriented Architecture) too has to become a reality as product companies have to figure out how various components would fit together.

How do you define innovation

Innovation is doing things in a different way to achieve a larger outcome. It's not about technology, but about customer experiences and business models. Innovation happens when one can transform the spark of creativity into an execution model. CIO today doesn't merely mean the Chief Information Officer, but the Chief Innovation Officer.
